A night with Stephanie--& SLTA

Tonight, I had the opportunity to be part of the elite crowd of 1,000 of Stephanie Meyer's biggest fans. My friend Tabitha had an extra ticket and invited me along to the book signing for Stephanie Meyer's new book The Host . So Taby and I have read the books in the Twilight series, and enjoyed them even, but have not really thought twice about them since we finished the last page. We are not obsessed with the characters to the extent we witnessed tonight at Thanksgiving Point's Show Barn. It was an incredible sight to see, and the perfect place for a "people watcher" like me.

When we arrived and passed a girl on the way in with a shirt that exclaimed "I LOVE STEPHANIE MEYER". We both thought "wow!" to ourselves and assumed she would be the extreme, but we were obviously not prepared for what we were about to see.

We walked in, one hour early, hoping to get Taby's books signed and be on our way but their were only about a dozen seats left in back. There were 1,000 people there. Many comfy in their seats reading the newest book because they just could not wait one minute longer until they got home. According to the usher, the first fans arrived at 7:00 AM!! are you kidding me people!

Then we scooted through rows of people eating nachos and hot dogs from the STEPHANIE MEYER CONCESSIONS STAND (don't worry if the sold concessions at a BOOK signing and a 5 minute discussion with personalized signs later to be retrieved by two little girls to bring home for souviners). Once we recovered from the initial shock, we noticed all of the incredible shirts that people had specially made or ordered to wear to this special event! I took a picture of the ones we particularly liked, only a select few made the blog post. Don't worry, no feelings were hurt--They were so proud of their attire that they gladly posed, completely oblivious to the mocking.

Then it got quiet and everyone screamed, stood, and started chanting "Ste-fan-ee!, Ste-fan-ee!" Hilarious! Stephanie Meyer then came to the stage and began to answer all the pre-written questions for the discussion portion of the night. The questions were the best. People think the characters in her book are real and wanted to know about their personalities, and why they were mean/nice/crazy. We were expecting Stephanie to say "They aren't real, I made them up" but she didn't. She answered each of the absurd questions as if the characters were real. It was a good laugh. After the questionss, the rows could come up and get books signed one at a time. Because we were in the back row we opted out of the 2 hour wait and decided to call it a night. But not before we came across a group with yellow sashes on who called themselves SLTA (Salt Lake Twilight Anonymous) as if it were a support group to deal with an addiction--perhaps it supports their addiction. They all had glitter "soul names" from the new book that they have made up about themselves. Can we say psy-cho! When we got the the car, the car parked right next to us had a TWLIGHT license plate! It was the perfect cherry on top for the fun evening. Thanks Taby-- I had so much fun!

Must say I like the books a lot...but wow!!! I didn't know people could be so obsessed and be that confused with reality?! I know they are fiction at least :) Glad you could document the experience!

i'm with you. i read all the books, enjoyed them, but haven't thought much about them since. so glad i could live this moment vicariously through you. hilarious! i love the shirt that says, "i can be mrs. cullen and you can be mrs. black...you can die and i can live forever." wow. some girls in my ward had a party that you were only invited to if you had read all three books and i swear it was three days after the third book came out. um...i wasn't invited.

Your post was so good. It should be in the column of a newspaper. Oh, how I wish I could have gone. I would have loved all the drama. I actually remember you reading one of the books while here in Royal. I have to remind you that you were VERY ENGROSSED in it. Are you sure you are not secretly obsessed?? Love ya!

This post made me laugh so hard. I really did love the books but that is just another world! It reminds me of going to the Harry Potter and Star Wars openings with people in costumes, etc.
